Sandia National Laboratories, in collaboration with the Naval Surface Warfare Center, is pleased to announce the Sandia Fracture Challenge. The challenge is to blindly predict a scenario in the fracture of a structural metal under quasi-static loading at room temperature. 17 pre-registered participants have already been invited to participate in the challenge and present their findings in Symposium 9-13, "Symposium on Simulation and Experiments of Ductile Tearing" as part ofthe 2012 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, November 9-15, in Houston TX. This challenge is also open to ad-hoc participants from the community, although the availability of additional presentation slots at the ASME Congress will depend on cancellations. The final session of the ASME Symposium will culminate with discussions on how the community should move forward to improve our predictive capabilities in the area of fracture. This final session will be chaired by Prof. Marty Dunn, program director for Mechanics of Materials at the National Science Foundation.
