Using JMatPro to Model Material Properties JMatProSince 2004, MAGMA has been working with the software JMatPro (Java-based Materials Properties software) to model the material properties of various alloys. Dr. Nigel Saunders, a highly respected expert in the field of thermodynamical calculations, has developed this powerful tool together with other colleagues at Sente Software Ltd. .
The thermophysical properties of foundry alloys play a critical role in casting process simulations. Some of the most important properties include the fraction of solid, the density, the specific heat capacity, and the total amount of latent heat. In many cases, these properties could be obtained from measurements. However, due to experimental difficulties at higher temperatures and in the mushy zone, a calculation of properties is often the only practical way to get the needed information.
Advanced modeling with JMatPro
For technical aluminum alloys, thermodynamic modeling together with the Scheil-Gulliver model in JMatPro already provides properties like fraction solid and specific heat capacity. Normally, volumetric and viscosity data cannot be calculated with these methods. But, JMatPro combines ‘classical’ thermodynamic calculation with material property models. This allows the user to calculate all the properties necessary for a MAGMASOFT ? simulation.
The current version of JMatPro also allows the prediction of properties like Young's modulus, which can be used for a MAGMAstress simulation.
Direct interface is coming soon
JMatPro allows the user to calculate property data for a wide range of alloys. It can calculate properties in the mushy zone that are impossible to directly measure. These properties have a significant influence on MAGMASOFT ? predictions. A direct interface between JMatPro and MAGMASOFT ? will be provided soon.
